How to Install a Turn Signal Flasher

Turn signals are fairly universal. Your car battery sends an electrical signal through the ignition switch to the turn signal relay, or flasher. The flasher interrupts the signal to allow the turn signal to flash on and off in cadence. Problems in the system typically arise from a burned-out fuse or a damaged relay. The relay is usually located beneath the dash to the left of the steering column. Some vehicles use combination hazard and turn signal switches mounted in the same location.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Remove the lower dash panel access cover with a screwdriver. Some vehicles house the relay adjacent to the fuse panel. Remove the fuse panel access cover.

  • Remove the old relay switch. The flasher is a silver cylinder or a small square box plugged directly into the wiring harness. Most vehicles mount the relay on the steering column, or to the right of the fuse panel. Pull the flasher straight out.

  • Install the replacement flasher. Reattach the dash panel and fuse panel covers.
