On a Honda Civic, the starter motor is responsible for turning over the engine and beginning the internal combustion process. When the starter goes out, the engine can't turn over and you will have a difficult time starting the vehicle. Fortunately, removing and replacing the starter can be don in a short amount of time. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2004 Honda Civic, but the process is similar for other years of Honda Civic as well.
Pop the hood. Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery with a wrench and then disconnect the positive terminal. Remove the air intake tubing from the throttle body using the flathead screwdriver, then pull the intake tubing and resonator out of the way to reveal the starter.
Disconnect the battery connections on the starter by hand to unplug the harness, and with a ratchet for the bolted-on connections. Take note of which wire goes where for reassembly. Unbolt the starter from the engine using the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket and take it out of the engine bay.
Set the replacement starter on the engine and bolt it in place using the ratchet. Connect the electrical connections using and open-end wrench and your hands.
Reinstall the air intake tubing using a flathead screwdriver, then connect the battery, starting with the positive terminal and ending with the negative terminal.
