How to Clean a Throttle Body on a Suzuki Aerio

The throttle body on your Suzuki Aerio may seem unimportant, but keeping it clean can help your car run smoothly for years, without stutter or stiffening, if it is properly cared for. This should be done at the same time you do the mass air flow sensor, about every 30,000 miles. You can take your Aerio to the local dealership and spend a lot of money or you can spend an afternoon and do it yourself for half the price.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Throttle body cleaner
  • Clean rags
  • Toothbrush
  • Disconnect the negative cable on the battery with a wrench. This will protect you from electrical shock in case of an accident.

  • Remove the air duct tube and air collector, using the screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps.

  • Spray the throttle body with throttle body cleaner, being careful to avoid the sensor. Spray both the inside and outside.

  • Wipe off the throttle body cleaner using the rag and toothbrush. You should not need a lot of pressure.

  • Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the throttle body is completely clean, including the butterfly valve and the edges of the hinges for the plate.

  • Reassemble the air duct tube and air collector.

  • Reconnect the negative cable to your battery using the wrench.
