How to Fix Heat in a Ford Taurus

Ford Taurus vehicles can be fitted with heat only, a manual heating and air conditioning system and an automatic temperature control system. The heater is powered by electricity from the vehicle's power system and is protected from overloading by a set of fuses. Air throughput is provided by a blower (fan), and air to that fan is fed from vents at the base of the windshield. Fixing the heat on a Ford Taurus can be accomplished by following some steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuses
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Clear snow, ice or leaves from the air vent at the base of the windshield. If this air vent is blocked, air can't be delivered to the fan and can't be heated and blown through the vehicle. Clear shopping, packages and coats from under the front seats. Objects can interfere with air flow through the car.

  • Replace the fuse if the blower won't function when you turn the fan on. The fuse box is in the engine compartment. Check the fuse for a broken wire, disconnect the battery and replace the fuse with exactly the same color and amperage. Two key heater fuses are the 10 Amp fuse in Position 31, and the 40 Amp fuse in Position 8. Use the puller device that's embedded in the fuse box cover to remove the fuses.

  • Set the fan to its highest setting if the fan works but heat output is poor. The highest setting will force heated air through the cabin at a greater rate. Turn the thermostat to the maximum position. Bypass the automatic temperature control system by switching off "Auto" and increasing the temperature control and fan manually. When the temperature has stabilized, return to the "Auto" mode.
