How to Clean a Volant Cold Air Intake

Most car owners are content to simply replace their factory air filters with other cheap paper filters, but several companies have developed cold air intake systems that feature cleanable, reusable filters. Volant is one such company. Owners should clean these filters at least as often as they would replace other filters. Depending on driving conditions, this could be anywhere from every 15,000 to 20,000 miles in dusty, rural conditions to every 40,000 to 50,000 miles in suburbia.

Things You'll Need

  • Filter recharging kit

  • Remove the filter from the filter box at the end of the intake pipe. If you chose not to install the filter box or one did not come with the kit designed for your application, remove the filter from the rest of the intake pipe.

  • Wash the filter in warm water. Do this from the inside out, using a spray attachment on your kitchen sink or garden hose to get inside the filter. All the dirt and grime will be on the outside of the filter, so spraying water on the outside only drives dirt further into your filter.

  • Apply the filter cleaner from the kit and repeat the washing process. This will help trap and remove finer, more difficult to clean oils and exhaust from the filter.

  • Let the filter dry and then apply the filter oil included with the kit. Do not saturate the filter. A thin, even coat will work just fine.

  • Place the filter back into the box or onto the intake pipe.
