How to Reset the Oil Light on a Maxima

When the oil light comes on in your Nissan Maxima, you are warned that it is time for an oil change. Many car owners perform this regular maintenance themselves instead of paying hefty mechanic shop fees. Doing this task yourself also means that there is no mechanic to turn off the "Check oil" light for you. Turning off the maintenance alert on your own is an easy process, usually outlined in your car owner's manual.

  • Insert the key into the ignition and turn it once to the "On" position. Do not turn the engine over.

  • Locate the joystick or pair of small buttons to the left of the steering wheel, near the steering column. Select the button to the left, or push the joystick to the left, to activate the "Maintenance Schedule" menu.

  • Look at the dashboard of your car while scrolling through the maintenance menu by pressing the joystick or button to the left. Keep pressing until you reach the "Reset" option. Press the joystick down, or press the small "Enter" button next to the steering wheel. The "Check oil" light should now turn off.
