How to Wire an Alpine Type R

An Alpine Type R is a subwoofer-style speaker manufactured by Alpine. This subwoofer is designed for installation into a subwoofer box in the trunk of a car. This installation process is quite easy and typically takes less than 30 minutes. Buy a subwoofer box and subwoofer combination that is designed to fit together. For instance, 10-inch subwoofers will not fit in a 12-inch subwoofer box.

Things You'll Need

  • Alpine Type R subwoofer
  • Subwoofer box
  • Speaker wire
  • Wire cutter
  • Wire stripper
  • 1 1/2-inch screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Cut two 2-foot sections of speaker wire and strip 1/2 inch of sheath from each end. Speaker wire is composed of two separate wires within a sheath, so remember to strip each of those wires.

  • Connect one end of a length of speaker wire to the subwoofer. There are two prongs on the back of the subwoofer, one is a positive terminal and the other is a negative terminal. Poke the exposed part of the speaker wire through the hole in the prong and wrap it around. Repeat this for the other prong. Connect the other end to the terminal cup located on the inside of the subwoofer box. Make sure that the positive terminals are connected via the same strand within the speaker wire and that the negative terminals are connected via their own strand.

  • Attach the subwoofer to the box using 1 1/2-inch screws. Make sure that the speaker wire is inside the subwoofer box so that it will not be pinched when screwing in the subwoofer.

  • Connect the other 2-foot section of speaker wire to the backside of the terminal cup. This is commonly located on the back of the subwoofer box. Connect the other end of this wire to the appropriate terminals on the amplifier. Amplifiers will typically mark these terminals as speaker inputs or subwoofer inputs. Once again, make sure that the positive and negative terminals are properly connected.
