How to Stop Honda Thieves

Car theft is a big problem and can cost the victims a lot of money. According to a 2008 study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the 1995 Honda Civic and 1991 Honda Accord were the two most stolen cars in the United States. No one step can prevent a thief from stealing your Honda, but there are several deterrents. The best prevention plan is to take several precautions to stop thieves.

  • Lock the doors and roll up the windows on your Honda at all times. A large percentage of car thefts result from unlocked doors.

  • Park only in safe, well-lit and populated areas at night. Thieves try to stay undetected, so a parking spot such as this will make it more difficult for them. If you have a garage, always use it.

  • Keep anything of value in your Honda out of sight. Either take your valuables inside with you or put them in your trunk to avoid a thief's detection.

  • Invest in a car security alarm. These range in price and features and can be a huge deterrent against thieves.

  • Cover the locking mechanism of car's your door locks with protection plates. These plates surround the cylinder lock area of a car door between the handle and door metal and will prevent a thief from using a slim jim or coat hanger to jimmy the lock. Protection plates can be found online and installed by a mechanic.

  • Use your emergency brake and park with your wheels turned to the side. This can make it harder for a thief to tow your car.
