How Do I Change 2002 Jeep Wrangler Spark Plugs?

The spark plugs on the 2002 Jeep Wrangler are concealed under a metal bar on the passenger side of the engine. The spark boots are built into the metal bar and the power connection is located on the rear of the bar. If the spark plugs are going bad, the engine will not run properly and if the plugs are fouled, the engine won't run at all. Replacing the spark plugs on the Wrangler does not require the use of any special tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • 1/2-inch socket
  • Spark plug socket
  • Replacement plugs
  • Wire spark plug gapper
  • Open the hood of the 2002 Jeep Wrangler and locate the square metal bar bolted to the side of the engine with the electrical connection on the rear of the bar. Pull the electrical connection off the rear of the bar using your hand.

  • Remove the four bolts that secure the bar to the passenger side of the engine using the ratchet and the socket. Pull the bar off the engine. Once you have removed the bar from the engine, you will see the six plugs.

  • Remove the six spark plugs from the head using the ratchet and the spark plug socket. Gap all of the new spark plug to .035. Place the wire on the gapper that has the number .035 on it between the metal arm on the tip of the spark plug and the diode in the center of the plug. The wire will gap the plug once you do this.

  • Place the new plugs into the head and tighten them until they are snug. Replace the metal bar to the engine. Replace the bolts to the bar and tighten the bolts hand tight. Reconnect the wire to the rear of the bar and close the hood.
