How to Remove Paint Protection Film

Paint protection film is a clear material that keeps dust, debris, rocks, weathering and bugs from penetrating and damaging your vehicle's finish. The film also helps in keeping your vehicle's paint job from fading. You can get paint protection film from a number of manufacturers and auto supply stores as well as online. Like automobile wax and other coatings, you can remove paint protection film if you no longer want the protective coating or if the film is starting to deteriorate.

Things You'll Need

  • Heat gun
  • Latex gloves
  • Tweezers or toothpick
  • Adhesive remover
  • Nonabrasive cloth or rag
  • Water hose with sprayer
  • Automotive soap
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Microfiber towel

Removing the Film

  • Move a heat gun slowly over one corner of the paint protection film to loosen the adhesive behind the film. Wear latex gloves to keep your hands clean.

  • Lift the corner of the film with tweezers or a toothpick.

  • Pull the film slowly from your vehicle, using both hands. If the film starts to break or is becoming difficult to remove, move the heat gun over the stubborn section as you pull the film with your other hand.

Removing Adhesive Residue

  • Apply 4 tbsp. of adhesive remover to a nonabrasive cloth or rag. Blot your vehicle's finish with the cloth or rag to remove any adhesive residue. Do not pour the adhesive remover directly on your vehicle--this chemical can penetrate your vehicle's paint and damage it.

  • Spray your vehicle thoroughly with water from a water hose. Mix 1/2 cup of automotive soap with 1/2 gallon of water in a bucket. Stir the soap mixture with a sponge.

  • Apply the mixture to your vehicle and scrub any dirt, debris and remaining adhesive residue from your vehicle.

  • Rinse your vehicle with water from the water hose. Repeat Step 3, if needed.

  • Dry your vehicle with a microfiber towel.
