How to Keep Cats Off of Your Vehicle

You spent hours washing and waxing your new car, only to wake up to a plethora of kitty footprints and fresh scratches all over the vehicle. Since your neighborhood is full of wandering felines, some creativity is necessary to keep your car's paint job free of blemishes. Deterring cats from clambering all over your ride may take some clever thinking, but a shiny, scratch-free ride makes up for your trouble.

Things You'll Need

  • Ultrasonic pet deterrent
  • Vinyl vehicle strips
  • Liquid cat repellent
  • Motion-activated sprinklers
  • Car cover
  • Store the car in a garage. Keeping the car in the garage not only eliminates the chance of unsightly cat scratches, it also reduces the likelihood of bugs and bird droppings.

  • Attach an ultrasonic pet repellent to the roof of the car with vinyl vehicle strips. These vinyl strips are often used to make stickers and labels for vehicles, and will not damage your paint job. Place the repellent on the roof, holding it in place with a vinyl strip along the front and back of the device. Press the ends of the strip firmly to the roof, rubbing your fingers back and forth to create a solid seal.

  • Spray liquid cat repellent on the ground around the vehicle. These repellents are made with strong-smelling ingredients most cats find offensive, and they will find another place to perch. The spray should be applied once a week, and after every rain storm for best results.

  • Set up a perimeter of motion-activated sprinklers around the car. Most cats despise getting sprayed with water, and a quick blast from the sprinkler as they walk by is enough to deter the majority of irritating felines.

  • Cover the car with a heavy car cover. Look for a cover with a padded underside and a slick outer surface to pad your car in the event a stray cat makes it through your other defenses. A slick outer surface will cause cats that are stubborn enough to climb on the car to slide right off, saving your paint.
