How to Remove the Battery in a 2002 Silverado

The average automotive battery, like the one in your 2002 Chevrolet Silverado, has a lifespan of five years. Replace your battery sooner if you live in an area with extreme temperatures or if you drive in extreme conditions. If you need to replace the battery, you can remove it at home in minutes. Buy a new battery from an auto retailer or Chevrolet dealer.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Socket and ratchet set
  • Raise the hood of your 2002 Silverado. Locate the battery on the driver's side of the engine compartment in the very front.

  • Remove the battery cables with a wrench. Start with the negative battery cable first, then remove the positive battery cable.

  • Locate the bolt securing the retaining strap. The bolt is at the base of the battery on the side. Remove the bolt with a socket and ratchet. Set the bolt aside in a secure location and remove the retaining strap from the battery.

  • Lift the battery out of the engine compartment.
