Changing Engine Coolant in a Chevy Blazer

The Chevy Blazer features a standard engine cooling system comprising a radiator that forces coolant through the engine when the thermostat indicates that the engine is running above operating temperature. The coolant is then circulated back into the radiator so it can cool. Changing the coolant in a Chevy Blazer is a fairly straightforward process that most drivers can complete in about 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic pan
  • Wrench
  • Clean shop rags
  • Let the Chevy Blazer cool for at least four hours. This will give the radiator a chance to depressurize and will help prevent burns.

  • Place a plastic pan under the radiator drain valve to collect the used coolant.

  • Twist off the radiator cap by turning it counterclockwise. Remove the radiator cap and set it aside on a clean shop rag. Open the valve on the bottom of the radiator on the driver's side. You may need to use an adjustable wrench to open the valve.

  • Close the valve after all of the used coolant has drained into the pan.

  • Pour fresh coolant into the top of the radiator until it is full. Replace the radiator cap, turning it clockwise until it locks into place.
