How to Check & Change a PCV Valve on a Volvo

The positive crankcase ventilation valve, commonly called the PCV valve, sends burned gasses from the crankcase to the combustion chamber. The valve is an important component as it reduces pressure within the crankcase. Built-up pressure within the crankcase can damage surrounding components. The valve can become clogged and dirty over time, so it’s important to check it regularly and replace it immediately if it’s faulty.

Things You'll Need

  • Owner’s manual
  • Needle-nosed pliers
  • PCV valve
  • Allow the Volvo to cool for 20 minutes before attempting any work under the hood. This will prevent components from burning your skin.

  • Open the hood of the Volvo and find the PCV valve. The valve is a small rubber valve located on the engine crankcase, and a small hose will be sticking out of it. Refer to your owner’s manual for a diagram if needed.

  • Remove the hose from the PCV valve by simply pulling the hose out. Start the engine, then place your finger over the valve where the hose was. You should feel a strong suction feeling; if you do not, the valve is clogged and will need to be replaced.

  • Turn the engine back off to remove the valve. Squeeze the valve using needle-nosed pliers and pull it out. This may require some force.

  • Place a new PCV valve on the engine crankcase and insert the hose into the new valve. Push the valve down into place to ensure it is securely in the crankcase. Close the hood of the Volvo.
