How to Improve Gas Mileage With New Oxygen Sensors

A vehicle’s oxygen sensor is responsible for monitoring the amount of unburned oxygen in the exhaust as it exits the engine. This process controls the vehicle’s fuel mixture, and tells the computer when there is too much or not enough oxygen within the fuel. Oxygen sensors are crucial to your vehicle’s performance and gas mileage. If you notice a drop in gas mileage or want to increase gas mileage, changing a failing or bad oxygen sensor will make a big impact.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Oxygen sensor socket or 22 mm socket
  • Owner’s manual
  • New oxygen sensor
  • Turn the vehicle off and allow the engine to cool down for 10 minutes. Oxygen sensors are easier to change when the engine is warm.

  • Open the hood of the vehicle. Locate the oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor will be found on the exhaust manifold. Refer to the vehicle's owner’s manual for the exact location if necessary.

  • Use a wrench with a 22 mm socket to loosen and remove the sensor. Special oxygen sensor sockets may also be used.

  • Connect the new oxygen sensor by plugging it into the connector located on the exhaust manifold. Close the hood of your vehicle.
