The air filter in a car is made up of paper fibers that collect dust and debris and prevent it from releasing into the cabin of the car. It is advisable to replace your filter every 15,000 miles, but it is best to pull our your filter and clean it every 5,000 miles. This will improve fuel efficiency and only takes a few moments using the proper materials.
Lift your car's hood. Using your owner's manual, locate your car's filter.
Remove the top that protects the filter. This will usually include either flipping up a series of clamps or unscrewing a wing nut. Either of these tasks can be done with your hands.
Pull out the filter. Turn it upside down and tap it against your hand to dislodge loose debris.
Attach a hand-held attachment to your vacuum. Vacuum the filter to remove all traces of dirt and debris.
Wet a cloth and wring it out so that it is damp. Wipe the filter on both sides with the damp cloth to remove any remaining dust particles.
Replace the air filter and the top. Close the hood.
