How to Dye Car Seat Covers

Seat covers are designed to add a little spice and color to your car's interior while protecting your seats. You can find a variety of seat covers at any auto shop or even hardware store. However, if you're looking for a specific color of seat cover and can't seem to find it, you can also dye the fabric yourself. All you need is a plain seat cover (preferably off-white, cream or beige since they are easiest to dye) and a packet of powder dye.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 package of powdered dye in desired color
  • 2 cups hot water
  • Large bowl
  • Washing machine
  • 1 cup chlorine bleach
  • Remove the seat covers.

  • Wash the seat covers in a washing machine with regular laundry detergent.

  • Hang the seat covers to dry (about 12 hours).

  • Fill your washing machine with hot water when you are ready to dye your seat covers. Use enough water for the covers to move freely.

  • Pour the powder dye and 2 cups of hot water into a large bowl. This will dissolve the powder.

  • Add the liquid dye from the bowl to the washing machine.

  • Soak the seat covers in hot water just before dyeing. Shake out any wrinkles and place the covers into the washing machine.

  • Set the washer for an extended cycle. The covers should be in the wash for 30 minutes before the rinse cycle begins.

  • Remove the seat covers when finished. Run them under warm water, then under cool water. The covers are finished when the water runs clear.

  • Hang the seat covers to dry.
