How to Troubleshoot the Honda Automatic Tire Sensor

Automatic tire sensors, known as TPMS, are now very common in most new automobiles. These TPMS sensors are designed to let the driver know when a tire is low on air pressure. Low tire pressure is the number one cause of tire failure. Sometimes the TPMS unit will fail or it will show a low pressure signal on your dashboard, so it is important to know how to troubleshoot the unit when it is not performing correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Air compressor with tire inflator fitting
  • TPMS scanner
  • Check the pressure in each tire individually with the air pressure gauge. The tires must be inflated to the exact specifications on the car door.

  • Inflate any low tire with the air compressor using the inflation fitting. If this does not solve the problem, then move on to the next step.

  • Become familiar with the TPMS scanner. There are many different brands but they all work in a similar fashion. Scroll through the menu until you find your year and make of Honda. Follow the on-screen prompts for each wheel until you find the TPMS unit that will not read. This is the malfunctioning unit.
