How to Replace Hyundai Wiper Blades

Almost all modern Hyundais feature different sized wiper blades between the driver's side and the passenger side. Slightly offset wiper arms require a larger blade on the driver's side to wipe and clear the windshield. Some vintage model, such as the older Excels, are exceptions to the rule. The older Excels also feature a slightly different wiper blade replacement procedure.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Wiper blade selection guide (available where wiper blades are sold)
  • Replacement wiper blades
  • Thick cloth or towel
  • Lift a wiper arm in the standing position away from the windshield.

  • Place a thick cloth or towel onto the windshield near the location where the center of the blade contacts the windshield. This will prevent the windshield from cracking if the spring-loaded wiper arm accidentally deploys against the windshield once the wiper has been removed.

  • Swing the wiper blade horizontally away from the wiper arm.

  • Locate the quick-release tab beneath the J-hook of the wiper arm. Press the tab in toward the top of the wiper arm.

  • Pull the wiper blade away from the curved end of the J-hook until it is fully released. It may be somewhat stubborn, depending on how long the blade has been on the wiper arm.

  • Swing the wiper blade slightly vertically toward the wiper arm to allow disengagement of the blade from the J-hook. Remove the blade.

  • Use a measuring tape to measure the old blade and then measure the new blade to ensure it is the same size. Note that if you're placing covered winter wiper blades onto the Hyundai, a slightly smaller size may be required.

  • Position the new blade slightly vertically against the J-hook of the wiper arm. Align the upper access hole of the blade over the J-hook, and then position the blade vertically against the hook. Pull upward on the wiper arm until an audible click is heard, indicating that the blade is locked in place inside the J-hook.

  • Pull up and down on the wiper blade in the vertical position against the wiper arm to ensure that it is securely locked into position.

  • Remove the cloth or towel and replace the wiper arm and blade assembly against the windshield.

  • Repeat the procedure for the other wiper.
