How to De-Ice Car Locks

During the cold months, a lot of locks on cars freeze with ice. There are a variety of quick and easy methods that anyone can use to get car locks de-iced.

Things You'll Need

  • Hair dryer
  • Extension cord
  • De-icer
  • Hot water

Using a hair dryer

  • Plug the hair dryer into a long extension cord into your house or garage. (Make sure it can reach the car!) Or, if you are lucky enough to have a portable cordless hair dryer, that works even better.

  • Turn the hair dryer on high, aiming directly at the lock.

  • After a few minutes, try inserting the key. If it's still too frozen, turn the hair dryer back on. This method shouldn't take too long, maybe about 5-10 minutes depending on how cold it is and how hot your hair dryer can heat up.

Using a de-icer

  • Having a de-icer on hand will make things a lot easier in the winter. Most auto shops sell these.

  • Spray the de-icer directly onto the locks.

  • Insert the key, and your ready to go!

Using hot water

  • Boil a pot of hot water.

  • Immediately take it outside and pour it on the lock.

  • Insert the key right away because the water will just ice up again.
