Installing an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve on your Ford vehicle is an easy procedure. You will need a minimum of tools, a new valve gasket and these simple steps. This guide applies to most Ford vehicles. If you need some specific information for your particular model, consult your vehicle service manual.
Park your vehicle in a safe place and open the hood. Make sure the engine and exhaust system are cool enough to touch to avoid skin burns.
Remove the engine cover if your vehicle is equipped with one. You may need a wrench or ratchet and socket.
Remove the air intake assembly from the top of the engine to reach the EGR valve if necessary. Locate the EGR valve on one side of the engine. Most valves resemble a wide and flat metal mushroom, between 1 and 2 inches in diameter. You can identify the valve by the metal pipe connected between the exhaust manifold and the valve, which is seating on one side of the intake manifold.
Disconnect the vacuum hose or hoses from the top of the valve by hand. Also, unplug the electrical connector from the top of the valve if your particular model is equipped with an electronic or digital valve.
Remove the threaded fitting between the EGR valve and connecting pipe using a wrench or adjustable wrench. Then remove the two mounting bolts using a wrench or ratchet and socket.
Discard the old gasket and clean the intake and valve mounting surfaces from old gasket material using a plastic scraper, if you are reinstalling the same EGR valve.
Install the EGR valve in place using a new valve gasket and start the mounting bolts by hand but do not tighten them yet. Start the pipe threaded fitting by hand to avoid damage to the threads. Then tighten the mounting bolts and threaded nut. Connect the vacuum hose or hoses and plug the electrical connector.
Install the air intake assembly and engine cover.
