How to Fix a Brake Light

The brake lights on your car are very simple to fix. But if not fixed right away driving can be very dangerous. A new bulb is cheap, and replacement should not be put off. Bulbs are normally sold in packages of two and can be found at any automotive supply store. Check the owner's manual to see if there are any specific instructions related to the replacement of brake light bulbs for your vehicle.

How to fix a brake light

  • To remove the cover lens from your brake light, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew it from the vehicle frame. Put the cover lens in a safe place, and locate the brake light bulb.

  • Pull the brake light bulb socket out from the vehicle frame. Hold the light bulb socket and push in on the light bulb, gently but firmly. Turn the bulb until you feel it release from the socket and pull the bulb out of the socket.

  • Set the new bulb in the socket, pushing in and turning it in opposite direction from the way you took it out. Make sure the bulb is firmly set in the socket and then replace socket in the vehicle frame.

  • Replace the lens cover on the vehicle, and screw it back into place. Have someone tap on the brakes while you watch the light to make sure it is working.
