How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a Pontiac Grand Am

Whether they're damaged in an accident or simply burn out over time, your Pontiac Grand Am's headlights may eventually need to be replaced. Fortunately, once you've purchased the right replacement bulb for your model year, performing the repair is relatively easy. These instructions only apply to Grand Am models made after 1992.

Things You'll Need

  • #9007 replacement bulb (1999 and later models)
  • #9006 and #9005 replacement bulbs (low- and high-beam bulbs for 1992-1998 models)
  • Remove the keys from your Grand Am's ignition and engage the parking brake. Turn the headlight switch to "OFF."

  • Loosen the hood with the release latch beneath the instrument panel. Then, step out of the car and pull up on the auxiliary release latch beneath the center of the hood.

  • Lift the splash guard out of the engine compartment and pull up the two retaining clips holding the headlamp assembly in place. Once they're loose, pull the assembly away from the car.

  • Turn the headlight bulb socket counterclockwise to remove it from the assembly, and then detach the electrical wiring connector from the back of the socket.

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and replace it with the new bulb.

  • Reattach the electrical connector and screw the bulb socket back into the assembly.

  • Reposition the assembly and test the new headlight to make sure it works before replacing the splash guard and closing the hood.
