How to Replace the Taillights in a Hyundai Santa Fe

Whether you use your Hyundai Santa Fe for exploring the wilderness or hauling groceries through the 'burbs, make sure you always replace the taillights when they burn out. The replacement bulbs only cost a few bucks and installing them is a breeze, so there's no reason not to do the job yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • #1157 replacement bulb
  • Flathead screwdriver (2007 and later models)
  • Phillips screwdriver (2006 and earlier models)
  • Turn the headlamp control to the "OFF" position, walk to the back of your Santa Fe and open the liftgate.

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to pry open the taillight assembly cover. If your Santa Fe was made before 2007, remove the retainer screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Remove the taillight assembly mounting screws to access the bulb sockets.

  • Locate the bulb socket holding the broken bulb. Once you've found it, twist it counter-clockwise and remove it from the assembly.

  • Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket and replace it with the new bulb. Then, press the bulb socket into the taillight assembly and turn it clockwise to secure its position.

  • Test the new bulb to make sure it works before remounting the taillight assembly and replacing the cover.
