Does the 2003 V6 Hyundai Tiburon Have an Interference Engine?

When the Hyundai Tiburon first landed in the American market, engine choices were limited to two different four-cylinder engines. In 2002, the second-generation Tiburon was released, with the option of a 170-horsepower, 2.7-liter V-6. The unique style, the impressive interior and the meat under the hood were all on par for the sticker price, but the engine itself was plagued by the need for a heavy maintenance schedule, that included changing the timing belt every 60,000 miles.

Catastrophic Failure

  • The 2.7-liter is an interference engine -- even if the timing belt slips even one tooth, this particular engine will sustain heavy valve train and piston damage.
