PT Cruiser Brake Switch Problems

The brake light switch on your PT Cruiser performs four important functions. If the switch is giving you problems, it may be time to have it replaced. Knowing the symptoms of a faulty brake switch help in diagnosing the problem. A new switch can be purchased for under $10 (as of March 2011).

Brake Lights

  • The main function of the brake light switch is controlling the brake lights. First, check the fuses and bulbs to ensure they are not bad before troubleshooting the switch.

Cruise Control

  • The cruise control deactivation is also controlled by the brake switch. If your cruise control is sticking, there is a good chance your brake switch may be going bad.

ABS System

  • The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is more of a challenge to troubleshoot. The PT Cruiser is equipped with an indicator light for the ABS system if there is an issue. This should be addressed by a professional mechanic.

Automatic Transmissions

  • If your PT Cruiser is an automatic, the gear shift interlock release is controlled by the brake switch as well. If your automatic transmission shifter is not shifting correctly, it may be the brake switch.
