How to Assemble Accel Spark Plug Wires

Worn spark plug wires reduce the efficiency of a vehicle's ignition system. This reduces the fuel economy and power of the vehicle. Replacing the worn spark plug wires at regular intervals eliminates the problem; however, special ordering plug wires made for your vehicle gets expensive. Using Accel universal wires costs less but you need to size and assemble the wires to fit your vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Permanent marker
  • Utility knife
  • Wire strippers
  • Silicone dielectric grease
  • Crimping tool
  • Push the spark plug boot onto the end of a spark plug installed in the engine.

  • Pull the wire through the wire looms until you reach the distributor cap or ignition coil. Hold the spark plug wire tight. Place a mark on the wire roughly three inches past the point the end of the wire crosses the connection on the distributor or ignition coil with a permanent marker.

  • Cut the wire on the mark with a utility knife.

  • Remove 5/8 inch of rubber sheathing from the end of the wire with a pair of wire strippers. Push a distributor boot over the cut end. Fold the copper inner core back onto the rubber sheathing. Slide a distributor connector over the end of the wire, leaving 1/16 inch between the end of the sheathing and the opening of the connector.

  • Crimp the connector to the wire with a crimping tool. Apply silicone dielectric grease over the crimped connector. Slide the distributor boot over the connection. Push the assembled Accel spark plug wire onto the distributor terminal.
