The sway bar on a vehicle's suspension is a simple device that is responsible for reducing the amount of lean, or body roll, that the vehicle experiences when it's driven around a corner. The bar is bolted to the suspension on either side of the car as well as to the chassis. At the ends, the bar has end links bolted to it. The end links in turn are bolted to the suspension. Sway bar links are available as replacements individually as well as in kits.
Loosen the lug nuts for the wheels. Lift the end of the car where you are replacing the sway bar link and lower it onto a pair of jack stands. In other words, if you are replacing the front sway bar links, lift the front of the vehicle. Remove the lug nuts and the wheels.
Locate the sway bar and the end link. The sway bar will be the thin, tubular length of metal that goes from one side of the car to the other. The end link is a short (five to ten inches) rod that goes from the sway bar to the suspension.
Remove the nut that holds the end link to the sway bar with a socket and a ratchet. Withdraw the end link from the bar. Remove the nut or bolt that holds the opposite end of the link to the suspension. Remove the end link from the suspension.
Install the new end link onto the suspension. Install the opposite end onto the sway bar. Tighten the hardware at either end with a socket and a ratchet.
Install the new end link on the other side of the car. Reinstall the wheels and the lug nuts. Lower the car to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts.
