The Features on My Keyless Remote Stopped Working

Many of today's vehicles are equipped with the convenience of keyless remote systems. But, like any electronic device, they can malfunction and render the helpful features useless when trying to access the interior of your car.

Function

  • A keyless remote system consists of a permanently attached receiver within the vehicle and one or two hand held remote transmitters. The transmitters' features can vary from unlocking one or all of the car doors, or open trunks with the press of a button.

Considerations

  • A common cause of keyless remote failure is low battery power. Verify that the batteries are fresh in the transmitter. Also try the features on a spare transmitter. If both remotes do not function even with fresh batteries, it is possible that the problem is within the car's receiver.

Prevention/Solution

  • To reset the system, and regain the features in the keyless remote, hold the unlock and lock buttons simultaneously for approximately one minute. The car should react with flashing lights or a horn beep to signify the system is in its default configuration, allowing the remote to function normally.
