How to Fix a Hole in a Car's Roof Liner

A car's roof liner is found on the inside of the vehicle along the top of the car. It is made of a type of fabric and is used to support door grab handles and the top of the seat belt. The car roof liners suffer wear and tear over time. Instead of replacing the entire roof liner, a cheaper alternative is to patch the hole. The first step to doing this is to remove the roof liner.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Torx wrench
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Staples
  • Staple gun
  • Remove all the trim surrounding the headliner. Loosen all the screws holding the trim in place with a Phillips head screwdriver. Loosen the bolts holding the visors and coat hanger in place with a torx wrench.

  • Pry open the cover on the dome light with a flat head screwdriver and remove the cover. Remove the screws holding the light in place. Disconnect the light from the switch and set it aside.

  • Pry off the seat belt bracket with a flat head screwdriver and remove the screws, holding the bracket in place. Pull the bracket down and set the seat belt on the floor.

  • Open all the doors and the trunk to the vehicle and slide the roof liner out of the car. Have one person on each side of the car to make it easier to successfully slide the roof liner out.

  • Measure the size of the hole and cut fabric that closely matches the roof liner to size with scissors. Cut the fabric so it is 1 inch larger than the hole all the way around. Sit it on top of the side of the roof liner that will not be visible when it is installed and staple it in place with a staple gun.

  • Slide the roof liner back into place and secure it to the car just like it was removed, but in the opposite order. Check the newly patched hole to make sure it is in good shape and there are no openings.
