How to Replace the Head Gasket on a Firebird

Built by Pontiac, Firebird was first introduced on the market in 1967. This two door sports car was powered by various V8 engines with different power output that were well known for their durability. Unfortunately there is no a problem-free engine. A blown cylinder head gasket on the Firebird is typically caused by overheating, and results in a substantial loss of performance. It also harm the engine by mixing the antifreeze and the engine oil in the block.

Things You'll Need

  • J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter
  • Drain the engine coolant. Remove the lower intake manifold. Remove the exhaust manifold. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Remove the cylinder head bolts. Remove the cylinder head. Remove the left cylinder head gasket. Disassemble the cylinder head.

  • Install a new left cylinder head gasket to the alignment pins that can be found on the cylinder block. Assemble the cylinder head. An important thing to remember is that the arrow on the gasket must point to the front of the engine. Failure to install the gasket properly will cause gasket failure and possible engine failure.

  • Install the cylinder head. Torque the cylinder head bolts. The bolts should be tightened in sequence, with the middle two bolts and proceeding in sequence out towards either right or left end of the engine. Tighten the cylinder head bolts to 37 ft-lbs. Use the J 36660-A torque wrench to torque the cylinder head bolts an additional 120 degrees.

  • Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Install the exhaust manifold. Install the lower intake manifold. Refill the engine coolant. Change the engine oil and filter. You are now good to go.
