How to Troubleshoot the Sunroof in a Chevy

From Camaros to Blazers, there is a long list of Chevy vehicles that have an optional sunroof built into the car. The small glass panel can be slid or lifted open to provide access to the sunshine and open air. However, over time the sunroof may no longer function properly, allowing moisture into the vehicle or just not opening. Through a few troubleshooting steps, you can determine exactly what is causing the problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Owner's manual
  • Listen to the sunroof for any unusual noises when trying to open the sunroof. If you hear a whirring noise, it means the motor in the sunroof has worn out. Take the vehicle to a repair specialist to have a new motor installed.

  • Check your owner's manual for the fuse box placement in the Chevy vehicle. Once you have access to the fuse box, remove the fuse that controls the sunroof (check the manual again for the exact placement of the fuse). If the fuse is damaged, black or cut, it means electricity is not reaching the sunroof. Replace the fuse to fix this problem.

  • Feel around the sunroof for any leaks. If water is getting into the vehicle, it is because the weatherstripping is damaged. Take the vehicle to your local repair shop or GM repair shop to have the weatherstripping replaced.
