Volkswagen began offering the switchblade key in the late 1990s. The switchblade key has an anti-theft chip you must program to your specific Volkswagen to help reduce theft. The switchblade key also has three buttons— "Lock," "Unlock" and "Panic"—that work with the keyless entry system. If you have a programmed keypad, you may program your additional keypads yourself. If not, you must have your key programmed by a dealership or auto locksmith; bring a copy of proof of ownership of your Volkswagen, a photo ID, VIN number and vehicle registration.
Shut all doors, then insert the switchblade key you would like to program into the ignition.
Turn the key one click; do not start the engine.
Press the “Lock” button on the keypad of your programmed remote.
Press the “Unlock” button on the remote you want program while still in the ignition. The horn will beep once to notify you that the remote has synced successfully with the vehicle.
Remove the key from the ignition to exit the programming mode.
