How to Mount a Winch on a Car Trailer

Mounting a winch to the frame of a car trailer must be done correctly to prevent possible damage to the car or trailer, and also to ensure the safety of both passengers and people outside the vehicle. The winch is mounted on the end of the trailer bed closest to the cab of the tow vehicle. The device will be subjected to a lot of stress so it must be securely mounted to the frame under the metal bed. This is a job that will involve some time to accomplish, and requires the correct tools and knowledge.

Things You'll Need

  • Mounting plate
  • Power drill
  • Hole punch drill bit
  • Mounting hardware
  • Winch
  • Place the mounting plate onto the bed of the trailer in the location you want it. Look under the trailer to make sure that you won't drill through any wires or lines.

  • Drill holes through the mounting holes on the mounting plate using a drill and bit. Insert the mounting bolts into the mounting plate holes and through the bed.

  • Position yourself underneath the trailer, and place washers, followed by nuts, onto each mounting bolt. Tighten the nuts to the specifications for that winch.

  • Place the winch on the mounting plate. Secure the winch to the mounting plate according to the manufacturer's instructions.
