The 2002 Cougar is a sports coupe manufactured and sold under the Mercury line of vehicles by the Ford Motor Company. The car was manufactured from 1967 through 2002. Some models of the Cougar feature a sunroof, more commonly referred to as a moonroof by Mercury. The moonroof is controlled by a switch inside the vehicle. The sunroof may malfunction and become stuck for numerous reasons including dirt, the car not being in the proper position or a mechanical failure.
Turn the ignition on. Insert the key into the ignition of the vehicle and turn to the "On" position. The moonroof will not function unless power is being supplied to the vehicle.
Check for dirt or objects in the moonroof opening. The moonroof will not open or close if there are objects detected in the way of the glass panel. Use a paper towel to wipe down the inside track of the moonroof.
Check for dirt or objects around the moonroof button. The button is located left of the steering wheel and appears as an "Up" arrow and "Down" arrow. Wipe down the controls with a paper towel.
Pull the sunshade all the way back. The sunshade protects the moonroof when it is in the closed position and prevents sunlight from entering the car from above. The sunshade must be completely pulled back before operating the moonroof.
Take your vehicle into a trained Mercury auto mechanic. The moonroof may have a mechanical failure such as a blown fuse or blown motor. A mechanic has the proper equipment and knowledge to diagnose a blown fuse or motor.
