Chrysler first introduced the 440 engine in 1966 in the Plymouth GTX street racing car. The 440 is one of Chrysler's B and RB series of high performance engines that came out during the 1960s and 1970s.

The six-pack 440 camshaft's intake valve had a lift of 0.45 inches and the exhaust valve had a lift of 0.464 inches. The intake valve opened at 21 degrees BTC and closed at 67 degrees ABC, while the exhaust valve opened at 79 degrees BBC and closed at 25 degrees ATC. The intake valve had a total duration of 268 degrees and the exhaust valve had a total duration of 284 degrees. Both valves had a total overlap of 46 degrees.
The bolts connecting the intake manifold to the cylinder head had 40 foot-lbs of torque and the bolts connecting the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head had 30 foot-lbs of torque. The bolts connecting the cylinder head to the engine block had 70 foot-pounds of torque.
