How to Charge a Suzuki Savage Motorcycle Battery

The Suzuki Savage is a popular single cylinder cruiser that was first made in 1986, and little has changed since in its design. Its reliability and ease of control make it a great choice for a beginning rider. If you are a beginner, you need to know how to properly charge a Suzuki Savage motorcycle battery. When riding season starts, it is one the basic maintenance skills you'll need to get out on the road.

Things You'll Need

  • Box wrench
  • 1.25-amp battery charger
  • Disconnect the battery cable from the negative post of the Savage battery, using a box wrench to loosen the bolt holding the terminal end to the post. Then remove the positive cable. Remove the cables in this order to avoid the risk of cross-charging the alternator and damaging it.

  • Clip the positive cable from the battery charger to the positive post of the battery, and then attach the negative cable to the negative post.

  • Set the charge rate to "Slow" or "Trickle" and 12 volts. The setting will depend on model of charger you have. While using the "Quick" or "Fast" charge setting will charge your battery faster, the charge will not be as throrough.

  • Plug the charger in. Let the charger warm up for 15 minutes, and then check the charge reading on the front of the charger. This will tell you the amount of charge that the battery needs. If your charger does not have an automatic sensor to turn off the charger when your battery reaches a 100-percent charge, then you will need to monitor the process. How long it will take to charge your battery can be determined by dividing the AMP hours listed on your battery by the AMP output on the charger. If you have a 100-AMP battery and a 10-AMP charger, it will take ten hours to bring it to a full charge. When it reaches 100 percent, then unplug the charger first and then disconnect the battery from the charger. Make sure you reconnect the battery positive-post first, then negative, to avoid potential damage.
