Ford Escape Hatch Won't Open

The Ford Escape is a compact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) that was first introduced into production in 2000 as the 2001 model. It is currently being manufactured as a crossover SUV (2011). The vehicle features a central automatic locking system that controls the doors and hatch, more commonly referred to as the liftgate. A key remote is used to unlock and lock the doors and liftgate. The key remote must be used to release the lock on the liftgate door and liftgate glass. Troubleshoot the key remote on Ford Escape hatch that won't open.

  • Check your distance when using the key remote. The "Unlock" button the key remote is used to unlock all doors, the liftgate and the liftgate glass window on the Ford Escape. The key remote works 3 to 25 feet away. Ensure you are standing at the proper distance and pointing the remote directly at the vehicle.

  • Check your location when using the key remote. Objects and other vehicles may be obstructing the signal from the remote to your car. Move a few feet to the left or right and try the "Unlock" button on the remote again.

  • Check the key remote battery. Insert a small coin into the slot near the key ring in order to pop off of the battery compartment cover. Remove the old battery and replace with a new one. The battery type is marked on the old battery. Place the new battery into the key remote battery compartment and snap the cover into place.
