How to Maintain Power Steering Fluid Levels in a Saturn Ion

The Saturn Ion replaced Saturn's S-series as the entry-level sedan for 2003 to 2007 and is a popular choice for young buyers. Drivers buying on a budget may also want to save money by performing basic maintenance and fluid level maintenance is a good place to start. For all Ion vehicles, the power-steering system is electric and does not have fluid, but can still be maintained using at home checks and procedures.

  • Be aware that your Saturn Ion vehicle has no fluid in the power steering system, which is electronically assisted. While you cannot check the fluid level periodically, you can figure out if there is a problem you need to troubleshoot by noticing when the power steering goes out and watching for the "check engine" light.

  • Locate the power steering system in your Saturn Ion vehicle. You will be able to access the power-steering system from the driver's side interior of the vehicle under the steering wheel if necessary.

  • Inspect the power steering fuses on top of the battery under the hood of your Saturn Ion. Consult your owner's manual for an exact map of the fuses, but check for any fuses that are detached or have worn wiring and need to be replaced.

  • Check that your power steering continues to function after major events affecting the electrical system in your vehicle. If you jump start another vehicle or must be jump started yourself, replace the battery or experience problems with other electrical components, check that the power steering works before driving again.

  • Take your vehicle to the dealership to conduct a computer diagnostic if you are experiencing problems with your power steering that are unrelated to the fuses or other components you can access yourself.
