How to Get Smoke Odor Out of a Car

Cigarette smoke penetrates deep into the surfaces of your vehicle, including the upholstery, carpets and even hard surfaces such as your windows and trim panels. While quitting smoking may seem an obvious answer, it will not rid your vehicle of the odor that has already taken up residence.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking soda
  • Vacuum
  • Glass cleaner
  • Paper towels
  • Towels
  • Odor-eliminating surface cleaner
  • White vinegar
  • 2 small containers
  • Cat litter

Sprinkle baking soda over your vehicle's carpeted and upholstered interior, and even on the dash and headliner. Let it sit for a half hour or more before vacuuming these surfaces.

Clean all the interior windows with glass cleaner. Spray the cleaner on the windows and use paper towels or soft towels to wipe off the cleaner. You might notice that the towels turn black from the removal of the deposited smoke on the windows.

Clean your car's dashboard and trim panels with an odor-eliminating cleaner appropriate for the surfaces in your vehicle. Use a soft towel to rub the cleaner onto the surfaces. Use a clean towel to wipe away any excess solution.

Soak clean towels in white vinegar. Put the towels into open plastic containers and place one in the front and one in the back of the car. Let them sit overnight. Remove them the next day.

Put cat litter in your ashtray to absorb unsavory aromas. You can put the litter in an open plastic bag for easier cleanup.
