When Does a New Car Need MOT?

The MOT stands for Ministry of Transportation test, a vehicle inspection that determines if your car is mechanically safe to be driven on roads throughout the United Kingdom. A passing inspection is confirmed with an MOT certificate.

Test Frequently

  • As soon as your vehicle is three years old, it must be brought to an authorized garage for the MOT test. Authorized garages display a three-triangle logo and a poster that lists the maximum fee for the test, although the garage is entitled to charge less. You'll need your registration document for your first inspection. After this test, your car must test yearly.

Tested Features

  • Your vehicle is examined for nearly all components that you use every day you drive, such as the seats, the seat belts, mirrors, wipers, horn, steering wheel and suspension. Emissions and the fuel system are also inspected before you receive a certificate.

The MOT Certificate

  • When you receive the MOT certificate of compliance, your vehicle has essentially met only minimum VOSA environmental and safety requirements at the time of testing. It doesn't imply that your car can make it on the road for the entire year.
