How to Check the Transmission Fluid on a 1998 Honda Acura Integra

The Integra began its production life in the same year as the Acura, 1986. The Honda-built compact car lasted through the 2001 model year and the RSX replaced it in 2002. The 1998 Integra came as either a coupe or sedan and had five trim levels available: RS, LS, GS, GS-R and Type R. The 1998 Integra came standard with a five-speed manual transmission and had an optional four-speed transmission available in all trim level, except the Type R. Checking the fluid in the 1998 Integra's transmission is a task that any owner should learn to perform.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean, lint-free cloth

Checking the Automatic Transmission Fluid

  • Park the Integra on a level surface and allow it to idle until it reaches operating temperature. Shut the engine off.

  • Open the Integra's hood and locate the transmission dipstick --- the stick with a yellow handle, near the air filter box. Pull the transmission dipstick from the transmission and wipe it off with a clean, lint-free cloth.

  • Reinsert the transmission dipstick and pull it from the transmission again. Check the level of the fluid on the end of the dipstick. The correct fluid level is between the two marks on the end of the transmission stick.

Checking the Manual Transmission Fluid

  • Raise the front of the Integra, using a floor jack, and set jack stands under the vehicle's subframe. Lower the Integra onto the stands.

  • Crawl under the vehicle and locate the manual transmission check and fill plug behind the passenger's side axle.

  • Remove the check and fill plug, using a ratchet and socket, and insert your finger into the check and fill hole to check the fluid level. The correct fluid level is at the bottom of the check and fill hole.
