What Does Leaking Coolant Mean?

Coolant, also called antifreeze, is the fluid in your car that absorbs engine heat and transfers it to the radiator. Leaking coolant means that coolant is seeping out of the cooling system into other parts of the car.

Detection

  • Wait until your engine is cool, then open the hood of your car to visually inspect the engine. Coolant usually comes in bright colors, such as orange, yellow or green. If the coolant reservoir adjacent to the radiator is empty or low, your car may be leaking coolant. Look for dripping or bubbling coolant on the water pump, radiator, head gaskets and hoses.

Significance

  • Your engine will overheat if your car does not have enough coolant. This can cause serious engine damage. Fix coolant leaks promptly to avoid major damage, according to Car Talk. For best results, take your automobile to a qualified mechanic.

Warning

  • Coolant tastes and smells sweet, but it is highly toxic to pets. Half a teaspoon of coolant can kill a cat, and 8 ounces can kill a large dog, according to Car Talk. Always keep coolant tightly sealed in a place inaccessible to pets.
