How to Remove Paint From Rims

Removing paint from car rims is similar to removing paint from any other part of the vehicle. Ugly-colored rims can ruin the entire look of a car and removing the paint from them is the first step toward getting new paint and a new look. This is a task that can easily be accomplished by any car owner with a little patience and some determination.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Dish soap
  • Bucket
  • Sandpaper
  • Painter's tape
  • Air blower
  • Rags
  • Painter's plastic
  • Dust mask
  • Safety goggles
  • Wash the rims thoroughly with dish soap and water to remove any dirt, debris or dust that is on them. Scrub completely with rags to ensure all grease, oil and other gunk is also removed. Blow into the crevices and spots on the rim with an air blower to free any loose debris that is hidden and not visible to the naked eye.

  • Sand the rims with 320-grit sandpaper to smooth everything out. Go over the entire area of the rim and make sure it is completely sanded. This smooth finish will help with the paint removal.

  • Place painter's tape around the outside edges of each rim. This will protect the parts where the paint is not to be removed and also protect the tire. Go around the edges of the rims and also the base of the car for further protection. Place painter's plastic around each tire and secure it to the ground with masking tape.

  • Apply lacquer thinner to the rim with a paint brush to remove the paint. Apply it to the first rim and put plastic over the rim. Tape the plastic over the tire and let it sit for 45 minutes before removing the plastic. This will allow the thinner time to fully adhere to the rim. Repeat the process in the exact same manner and once again allow 45 minutes to dry.

  • Add a third and final lighter coat to the rim and wipe it down with a rag to remove any excess paint and dirt that may still remain. Allow proper time to dry and then once again wash thoroughly with soap and water. Allow proper time to air dry and then move on to the next rim using the exact same process.
