Where Is the Fuel Filter Located on a 2006 Pontiac G6?

Somewhere in the fuel delivery system of cars and trucks there is a component known as the fuel filter. On many vehicles, the fuel filter is installed on the fuel line. On other vehicles, such as the 2006 Pontiac G6, the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump module located inside the fuel tank. If you ever need to replace the fuel filter on the G6, the biggest challenge likely will be getting to it.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • 2 wheel chocks
  • 2 jack stands
  • Fuel siphon pump
  • Fuel container
  • Socket set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Pliers
  • Adjustable wrenches
  • Open-end wrenches
  • Box-end wrenches
  • Park the Pontiac G6 on level ground and set the parking brake. Lift the hood and prop it open. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Place a wheel chock in front of and behind one of the front tires. Lift the rear end with a jack and lower the G6 onto two jack stands. Remove the jack.

  • Empty the fuel tank into an approved gasoline container, using the siphon pump. Disconnect the fuel lines and the filler tube from the tank.

  • Disconnect the wiring harness from the tank. Place the jack under the center of the tank. Unbolt the straps holding the fuel tank to the frame of the Pontiac G6, using a socket or open-end wrench. Lower the tank to the ground with the jack and slide it out from under the G6. Unbolt the cover for the fuel pump/filter module from the tank. The fuel filter is part of the module and can't be replaced separately.
