The rotational energy of your vehicle's engine does more than simply provide power to the wheels on the pavement. The engine provides rotational power to the power-steering unit, the air-conditioning compressor, the water pump, the alternator and other devices on the engine. A malfunctioning belt tensioner pulley will not only fail to provide the necessary tension to the belt that controls the devices on your motor, it will also create unpleasant squealing noises as you drive down the road.
Rotate the bolt on the adjustment bracket located next to the pulley counterclockwise. The adjustment bracket is used to increase or decrease the tension on the belt exerted by the tensioner pulley.
Remove the pulley belt from around the tensioner pulley.
Loosen the bolt in the center of the pulley by turning it counterclockwise.
Fasten the pulley puller to the center of the tensioner pulley. Gently apply force to remove the pulley, making sure not to warp the mounting point of the pulley. Set the pulley to the side of your workspace once it is removed.
Push the new pulley carefully into position. Avoid applying excess force unevenly on the surface of the pulley, as the pulley bearing can warp and prime the device for seizure under operating temperatures.
Bolt the pulley into place. Place the belt back on the pulley.
Turn the adjustment bracket bolt clockwise to put tension on the belt around the tensioner pulley.
