How to Replace a Wrangler Map Sensor

Replacement of the MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor on your Jeep Wrangler is very easy. The sensor is located on the manifold or air box, depending on which engine is in your Jeep. You may notice symptoms such as a rich mixture and smoky exhaust output, and the Jeep may misfire and run rough. Do not rely on the symptoms alone to diagnose a faulty MAP sensor. You can stop by your local auto parts store and they'll usually scan the computer for free.

Things You'll Need

  • Sensor-safe cleaner
  • TORX screwdriver set
  • Locate the MAP sensor on the rear of the intake manifold near the air intake box. You will see two TORX-head screws and an electrical connector on the MAP sensor.

  • Clean the area around the MAP sensor with a sensor-safe cleaning agent. There are several spray-type cleaners available from your local auto parts store.

  • Disconnect the electrical connector by squeezing the tab on the connector and pulling it straight out of the sensor. Be careful that you do not break the tab on the connector or it will not connect properly when reinstalled.

  • Unscrew the two mounting screws in the MAP sensor using a TORX-head screwdriver and set them aside. You will reuse them when you mount the new sensor.

  • Remove the sensor from the manifold by pulling it straight out of the manifold. There is a rubber O ring on the sensor that allows it to seal into the manifold; be sure to verify that it came out with the sensor.

  • Install the new MAP sensor by pushing the connector into the manifold until it seats against the mounting tab where the screws thread in. You may need to twist it back and forth to slide it in.

  • Insert the two mounting screws through the MAP sensor body and into the manifold. Tighten the screws using a TORX-head screwdriver, being careful not to crack the plastic body of the sensor.

  • Plug the electrical connector into the MAP sensor so that it clicks into place. You should now start and test-run the engine to verify that the MAP sensor is functioning as intended.
