How to Replace a Valve Cover Gasket on a 2005 PT Cruiser

The 2005 Chrysler PT cruiser has an engine that sits sideways inside the engine compartment, with the transmission located on the left side. On the top front of this four-cylinder engine is the valve cover, connected by 10 securing bolts. The securing bolts are located on the upper, lower, left and right sides of the cover. The gasket needs to be changed if there is carbon buildup around the edge of the cover.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • 5/8-inch socket
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • New valve cover gasket
  • Torque wrench
  • Open the hood of the PT Cruiser and locate the valve cover on the top front of the engine. Locate the retaining bolts that are securing the cover to the top of the engine.

  • Remove the bolts from around the edge of the cover, using the ratchet and the socket. Pull the cover off the engine, using your hands, and locate the gasket on the underside of the cover, along the edge.

  • Remove the gasket from the cover by scraping the gasket off the cover with the flat-head screwdriver. Place the new gasket onto the edge of the cover and replace the cover to the top of the engine.

  • Replace the securing bolts on the valve cover and tighten them. The bolts will need to be tightened to 49.9 foot-pounds, using the torque wrench.
