Dodge Caravan Rear Brake Rotor Removal

Removing the rear disc brake rotor on a Dodge Caravan is an important part of necessary brake maintenance. Rotors that are badly scored from brake pad wear indicators and coarse debris, as well as warped rotors that impede the contact between the brake pads and the rotor, present a significant risk of degraded performance and even brake failure. It is a good idea to regularly inspect the brake rotors and promptly replace damaged rotors when they are discovered.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug wrench
  • Lifting jack
  • 2 jack stands
  • 13 mm wrench
  • 17 mm wrench (or socket and ratchet)
  • Dead blow mallet
  • Chain lubricant (optional)
  • 2 wheel blocks
  • Park the Caravan on a flat surface. Place tire blocks in front of the front tires of the van.

  • Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels with the lug wrench.

  • Place the lifting jack beneath the frame at the back of the van. Lift the rear end of the Caravan and place jack stands beneath the frame for support.

  • Remove the lug nuts and the rear wheels.

  • Use a 13 mm wrench to remove the caliper bolts located toward the outside edge of the caliper.

  • Lift the caliper from the Caravan's caliper bridge and rest it on a jack stand (idle) or suspend it from a bungee looped around a component above the rear brake assembly. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake line to avoid brake line damage or disconnection from the caliper.

  • Remove the caliper bridge bolts with the 17 mm wrench (or socket and ratchet). Remove the bridge from the rotor.

  • Pull the rotor from the wheel bolts by hand. If the rotor is stuck to the wheel hub, use a dead blow mallet to strike the top-hat section of the rotor to loosen the grip of rust or other adhesive culprits. The top-hat section of the rotor is the raised area on the outward facing surface of the disc.
