How to Unlock a Car Radio on a 2000 Grand AM

Audio systems for the 2000 Pontiac Grand Am are equipped with TheftLock, a feature that discourages theft of the radio by disabling all functions if the radio is stolen. TheftLock will activate any time battery power is lost, for any reason, and the radio will be locked. To unlock the radio, you have to enter the three- or four-digit code that you used to activate the radio originally.

  • Find the code that you used to activate the Theft Lock system. As you proceed, be sure not to pause more than 15 seconds between steps or you'll have to start over.

  • Turn the ignition key to "ON" or "ACC." This will bring up "LOC" on the radio display panel.

  • Push “MIN,” which will bring up "000" on the display panel.

  • Press “MIN” a second time so that you can change the last two digits on the display to the last two digits of your code.

  • Push “HR,” which will allow you to change the first digit or the first two digits on the display to the digits of your code.

  • Confirm that the code displayed on the radio matches your code.

  • Press the “AM-FM” button, after which "SEC" will appear. This signifies that you have successfully unlocked your radio.
